Independent Reading Post 1

The book that I chose for the independent reading is The Natural by Bernard Malamud. I chose this book because I saw the movie when I was younger and really enjoyed it. Also, my dad has read the book and recommended it to me when he saw the list. Lastly, I love reading sports books and I think it was the only one on the list. Cant wait to get started!

When I Grow Up I Want To Be A Cooker

Maria Marshall  (British, born India, 1966)

                                                                                              Date: 1998
I like this photograph because it shows that kids see their parents or role models doing something wrong but they don't know that and want to try it anyway. Kids now-a-days experience bad things, like when they see their parents smoking or drinking, and it can have a big effect on them. Children need to be taught what is right or wrong from early on, which will help them succeed in life. Luckily, this photograph was set up by this boys mother and the cigarette is a fake. The mother added puffs of smoke and rings using Hollywood special-effects software. She did this work to ask people how parents can prevent their sons/daughters form becoming drug addicts in the future.

This is my holocaust project with the quote "To save one life is to save the world". I chose this picture of a young man carrying an unconscious little girl because it shows he is saving her life and really making a difference. I made the picture a rough texture to show the struggle he is going through. I made the quote a bright yellow so it would stand out and draw the viewers attention.

These are my two midterm projects. For the first one i chose restaurants in Charlottesville and put them on a road sign on a highway. I also put a man in a convertible to add to the road scene. For the second one I created a splash of orange juice and added it to a picture of a glass of orange juice. I enjoyed working on these projects and hope everyone enjoys my work.

These are my two holiday cards to the soldiers. For the first one i created a snowman on a snowy forest background and used the text tool to write messages to the soldiers. For the second one I got a picture of the border of the United States and a picture of the american flag and put it in the border. I used the text tool for the second one as well. I enjoyed working on this project and think it is a good way to be creative and do something good for somebody else.

This is my first weird sport project. My second one I did with Tucker Ottaway and Harris Tolber and it is on Harris' blog. For this assignment we were told to create a sport that is not real and that is our own. I decided to make a different version of polo. The old men ride ligers (a mix between a lion and a tiger)   and use mallets to hit a bouncy ball. They play on a soccer field. This sport is most popular in Southeast Saudi Arabia.

These are my two cover pages for books I chose and for a book that Tucker recommended to me. The assignment was to create an alternative cover page for a book we have read and also one for a book that a friend recommends. I chose the book Heat by Mike Lupica and Tucker Ottaway recommending the book Friday Night Lights. I put a pitcher for the Cincinnati Reds on the cover of Heat because he can throw it 100 mph, which is the fastest in the MLB. I also added a flaming baseball because thats what i think of when i think of a pitcher throwing really fast. For Friday Night Lights I made the background a football field with a powerful light in the top right corner and put three of the Permian players in the foreground. I enjoyed this assignment and I'm satisfied with my work.
